(A book report for History and Philosophy of Science class, Professor : Dr. Renee Schwartz)
The scientists have been working on scientific research through time in order to prove their theories through the collection of data. Through conjectures, theories and laws have been proposed and tested to meet reliability and be scientifically accepted. The hypothesis can be based on evidences and these evidences are possible to change because there are many factors that influence such as environment, technology development, and knowledge. In fact, these factors interfere the way scientists interpret their data. Sometimes, the scientists cannot see the evidences but the methods can help them to get closer to the truth. The episodes on the way scientist struggle with collecting data can be a long story that should not be ignored.
Some researches show that the view of nature of science (NOS) influences understanding in science content. Although teaching the history of science (HOS) can improve science understanding, it is not included in the science classroom. One of science stories that contribute to the science progress is the discovery of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). The book titled The Double Helix written by James D. Watson tells the story on how Watson and his colleague, Francis Crick, had struggled in proposing the structure of DNA. It was not a single effort; many scientists from many disciplines were involved in determining the structure either directly or indirectly. This essay will report the efforts on discovering the nucleic acid and what the importance of this NOS for science teaching. There are several aspects of NOS such as subjectivity, the differentiation between observations and inferences, creativity, and tentativeness, that are going to be explained based on the story.

Well this is the expression of my confusion after several weeks doing my master’s degree in the department of Science Education, Western Michigan University. This is actually because of a course that I hated at first but I love much then, it is Philosophy of science. It has lots of reading and writing assignments. However, the first positive impress of this course was no test at all (thanks God) and the class was full of discussion so the students can express their notions! Not only by speaking but also by writing. Great course!
There are two required books instead of other materials that are posted in the e-learning website that have to be read each week, at least two readings and two writing assignments have to be turned in. I enjoy it so far, although it is not easy to catch the ideas of what the philosophers say on their books related to science and the progress of science, moreover in the way they criticized the scientists!

GM Foods or Genetically modified foods is foods which are produced by animals or plants that its gene has been modified. This is aimed to get better crop quality and increase yields. Recently, GM foods are believed as one of the solutions for food crisis. Since the world population is growing rapidly and the land is not enough to produce sufficient food, people have to be more creative in overcoming this problem.
It has been a long time since a new technology has been invented and scientists from many countries have taken this opportunity to solve problems that are experienced by human beings. There are a lot of electronic devices that allow researchers to do many things that were impossible to be done previously such as modifying genes of organisms by inserting new genes from other organisms or removing existing genes. This is the principle of modifying genes. However, the methods that are used can be varied depend on the objects and the purposes. (more…)

(more…)

sepi sendiri aku rasa
Ramai, penuh, sesak, tapi mengapa aku merasa kesepian?
Apakah keramaian itu nyata atau hanya fatamorgana?
Tertatih, terseok langkah ini
Tapi aku tetap berusaha melangkah
Seperti ada seberkas cahaya
Aku coba mendekat
Pelan, tapi pasti
